Biofuel feedstocks

Biofuel feedstocks

Biofuel technologies solve the problem of finding renewable energy sources with minimal use of valuable resources. They also allow recovering waste from various industries on an industrial scale in an environmentally friendly way.

What is Biofuel Feedstock?

Biofuels are produced from any organic raw material. This can be animal waste, shell and stems of plants, substandard wood, as well as food industry waste.

How is it produced?

Biomass is crushed, subjected to biological or thermochemical treatment (heating, exposure to various types of microorganisms). After that, the resulting substances are sorted, cleaned, and then sent to the collector.

Feedstock for Biofuel

There is a classification of biofuels according to the type of feedstock:

  • The first generation of fuel is made from plants with a high content of sugars, fats, and starch. For example, soybeans, rapeseed, corn, and sugar beets. The cultivation of these crops is harmful to the climate.
  • The second generation of biofuel raw materials includes grass, timber, agricultural waste. Such biomass requires more technologically advanced processing methods but also solves the problem of industrial waste disposal. An HVO oil belongs to this class.
  • The raw material base of the third generation is algae. They are specially grown, but this does not require either fresh water or land. Unpretentious algae allow getting fuel without consuming valuable resources.

Different generations of biofuels differ in their ecological characteristics. Biomass from the second and third groups are the most preferred option for fuel production.

Most Popular Biofuel Types

HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is second-generation synthetic diesel fuel. It is 100% renewable and provides an advanced alternative to conventional diesel. HVO biodiesel is produced by hydrotreating vegetable oils (no palm oil), which results in a high-quality fuel, the chemical structure of which is almost identical to conventional diesel fuel.

Bioethanol is an alternative liquid clarified fuel that can be used in gasoline engines. It is obtained by fermentation from agricultural products containing starch or sugar, such as grain, sugar cane, corn, potatoes, sugar beets, molasses, sorghum. Bioethanol cost is quite affordable.
